Totally true.

Arrange to have two cars shipped a month in advance with a flexible ship date.

Call up earlier this week to give them a firm ship by date and that I can ship with 24 hours notice.

I had to leave a message because nobody answered Monday or Tuesday.

Yesterday I get a message that they will pick up between 7-8PM. This was at 2:30. Apparently they missed an e in my email domain the day before.

At 9PM I finally get ahold of the driver, “There is a problem, we’ll be by around in the morning around noon to pick them up.”

At 1PM “I said yesterday I told you I’d pick them up in the afternoon, I’m 40 miles away I just need to take care of a problem. I’ll give you a call when I’m on my way.”

It’s 4:30. Still no call. I’ve been sitting around for two days and putting off errands because the truck should be here. In ten days I’ll be driving cross country with our stuff, time is getting really freaking short to waste waiting around for a truck that will be here at a time that changes every time I ask.

6:30 update: he is 23 miles away.

8:20 update

??

My mom shipped her Sienna out to me last month . Indiana to Colorado. No issues with pickup or with the dropoff.

I thought my experience was normal. Maybe not?

This is why there can money  made doing specialized (read: expensive) auto transport. Back in 2007ish when I was between careers, I spent a few months putting my then 3500 GMC dually and a borrowed 52 foot car hauler to work using leads from a friend while pretending not to be a commercial hot shot driver with out a CDL or commercial liability insurance. . I did dedicated runs for a single customer at time, almost always a car(s) that were old, rare, racecars or otherwise something special that they would pay $2+/mile to have it taken directly to where it was needed halfway across the country yesterday.

The normal auto hauling game sucks. It is an industry of ruthless competition driving on circuits trying to undercut each other by pennies per mile to get loads when and where you need them to keep the circuit moving. If you’re willing to pay, there is the part of the industry that will show up at a very specific time (and often on very short notice) and haul only your car directly where you want it. The catch being that it is one of those if you have to ask type things...

I actually considered setting up a legitimate business doing that, but the cost of a commercial liability policy for an under 25 driver was frighteningly expensive. Add that to the monthly payment on a new F450 actually speced right for the work and a new trailer, and I would’ve had to stay pretty busy pretty much all the time to make it work. Considering what happened to the economy and fuel prices not long after, I probably made a wise choice not getting into the business in a serious way.
